Florida health officials have issued a rabies alert for the Melbourne area.
The Florida Department of Health issued a rabies alert for the Melbourne area on Thursday, urging residents to take precautions after a stray cat tested positive for rabies.
The FDOH issued the alert after a stray cat that was killed in the area of Lynn Avenue along Lowry Street in Brevard County on July 17 was confirmed to have rabies.
“The Brevard Health Department is monitoring wildlife in the area for rabies. All residents and visitors should be aware of the current presence of rabies in wildlife,” the health department said in a press release. “Humans and livestock should avoid physical contact with wildlife at all times (e.g., raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, coyotes, etc.). Wild animals pose a high risk of infection to humans and require post-exposure treatment for rabies.”
Anyone exposed to rabies should receive appropriate treatment immediately after exposure to protect themselves from the risk of rabies.
Thursday was the third rabies alert in the Melbourne area this year. The FDOH also issued a similar rabies warning. after a raccoon captured May 26 near Breeze Lane and Lorna Drive, east of N. Wickham Road in the Melbourne area, tested positive. And in April On April 16, another raccoon on Heald Road, near Minton Road, tested positive.
What is the extent of the rabies alert?
This rabies alert will be in effect for 60 days and includes the following boundaries in Brevard County:
- Northern boundary: North Harbour City Boulevard
- Southern Boundary: Lorraine Drive
- Eastern boundary: South Babcock Street
- Western boundary: Magnolia Avenue
What precautions should you take?
Residents and visitors should be aware that rabies may currently be present in wildlife in the area.
FDOH instructs people to take the following precautions to prevent exposure to rabies:
- Pets must be directly supervised and on a lead and livestock must remain on the premises.
- If you are bitten or scratched by a wild or domestic animal, seek medical attention and report the injury to DOH-Brevard by calling 321-634-6337 (option 3).
- If an animal bites a pet or livestock, seek immediate veterinary attention and contact Brevard County Sheriff's Office Animal Services at (321) 633-2024 and contact Animal Services to have the suspected stray animal removed.
- Do not handle or feed stray animals or unintentionally lure them away with outdoor pet food, open trash cans or other food sources.
- Never adopt or bring wild animals into your home, instead contact a licensed wildlife care worker.
- Vaccinate pets and livestock according to your veterinarian's recommended schedule.
- Prevent wild animals, including bats, from entering residential or occupied spaces in homes, schools and other similar locations where they may come into contact with people and pets.
