Alabama students have recommended and required vaccines

Birmingham, Alabama (WBRC) — Germs will inevitably spread this fall in packed classrooms where noses are running and kids are sharing school supplies, so health experts are urging parents to take action.

“Children are encouraged to get up to date on vaccinations to reduce their own and others' risk of infection,” said Dr. Wes Stubblefield with the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), “so that we can keep kids in school, keep schools open, and keep the spread of infection as low as possible.”

It details the vaccinations required for Alabama elementary, middle and high school students to prevent a variety of diseases, from polio to chickenpox.

“If parents are concerned that their child may be falling behind, they can talk to their health care provider or vaccinator to make sure their child is vaccinated before school starts,” Dr. Stubblefield said.

Some vaccinations are required for students, while others are recommended. ADPH recommends HPV and influenza vaccinations.

Stubblefield added that improved vaccines are in the works, and he expects COVID-19 and flu shots to be available in late August or early September.

“For those wanting to get the flu vaccine or COVID vaccine, updated vaccines should be available to them later in the fall.”
