Chronic Wasting Disease Found in Spokane Deer
The state's first case of chronic wasting disease has been confirmed in an adult female white-tailed deer that was found dead in the Fairwood area of north Spokane.
The disease infects deer and is fatal.
Chronic wasting disease has no cure and can only be identified through testing of lymph nodes and brain tissue.
Lymph nodes from the dead deer were submitted to the Washington Animal Disease Laboratory at Washington State University in July and tested positive.
The disease has been identified in wild and captive cervids in 34 other states and four Canadian provinces.
The state Fish and Wildlife Department began inspections in 1995.
Efforts have been stepped up since 2021 in eastern Washington due to its proximity to known cases in western Montana.
The Fish and Wildlife Service is preparing for the possibility that the disease may be discovered in Washington state.
Towards these measures, the Ministry has developed a Chronic Wasting Disease Control Plan, which will guide future responses to managing the spread of the disease.
Chronic wasting disease can infect deer, elk and moose, and the Fish and Wildlife Service is preparing to take tissue samples from those animals in the initial response area to see if the disease has spread.
To date, there have been no confirmed cases of chronic wasting disease spreading from wild animals to livestock, or from deer to other wild animals.
There is also no evidence of human infection.
But to minimize risk, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends not eating meat from animals that have tested positive.
Testing of deer, elk and moose will be important in the upcoming hunting season to detect additional cases and better understand the spread of the disease in the state.
Hunters will be notified of any changes to inspection and carcass transportation regulations.
