Dallas woman dies from West Nile virus
Dallas A Dallas woman has died from West Nile virus, Dallas County's first death from the mosquito-borne virus this year.
The Dallas County Health and Human Services Department said the woman was a resident of the 75230 ZIP code north of Dallas and had underlying health conditions.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss,” said Dr. Philip Huang, director of DCHHS. “This heartbreaking tragedy highlights the importance of protecting yourself from mosquito bites that can carry several diseases, including WNV. With mosquito activity remaining high in Dallas County, we urge residents to follow the 4 Ds to protect themselves.”
The four D's are:
- DEET: When you're outdoors, apply an insect repellent that contains DEET or other EPA-approved ingredients.
- Clothing: Wear long, loose, light-colored clothing to cover exposed skin.
- Drainage: Eliminate sources of standing water around your home or business to prevent mosquito breeding.
- Dusk to dawn: Reduce outdoor activity during times when mosquitoes are most prevalent.
