WHO emergency committee to meet on August 14 on MPOX issue

The World Health Organization's Emergency Committee will meet on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, to decide whether to activate the highest alert level. Mpox outbreaks in several African countries.
The closed-door virtual meeting will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, the WHO said in a note to reporters.
“The committee will provide me with its view on whether this outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote in a letter to X. If it does, the committee will advise on “how to better prevent and reduce the spread of the disease,” he added.
Formerly known as monkeypox, mpox is an infectious disease caused by a virus that is transmitted to humans from infected animals, but can also be transmitted from person to person through close physical contact. The disease causes fever, muscle aches, and skin lesions that look like large boils.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Currently most affected by the latest epidemicAs of Aug. 3, there had been 14,479 confirmed and suspected cases and 455 deaths, according to the African Union health agency.
