Pediatricians are urging families to practice basic hygiene habits as students return to school.
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The number of positive COVID-19 cases has more than doubled since July. North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Wastewater MonitoringThe rate remains high as children prepare to return to school.
This month The CDC reported that 18% of COVID-19 tests were positive.By May, that figure was closer to 3%. Wilmington Health pediatrician Dr. Erin Adonino said she has seen the increase firsthand in her practice.
“Large groups of people together make it easier for the virus to spread,” Dr. Adonino said. “As we get to the end of the summer and schools and things start up again, we're seeing more and more people congregating in the same places,” she added.
As children head to the classroom, she encourages parents to teach their kids basic hygiene habits: They should know how to wash their hands properly and do so frequently, and they should learn to cough into their elbows instead of their hands, she says.
Children with a fever should not go to school, and Dr. Adonino said children should have no fever for at least 24 hours without medication before returning to school to prevent the spread of the virus.
She said parents need to be careful about COVID-19, but still sending their children to school is the best option.
“Honestly, right now I think it's best to keep kids in school even though there is a slight risk of contracting COVID-19. I think the benefits of going to school and getting a good education, the social interaction and the structure and routine that school gives far outweigh the risk of contracting COVID-19 at this point,” Dr. Adonino said.
