Duke University Face Mask Study: Some masks may be worse than no mask due to slow diffusion of COVID 19
But are they all better than nothing at all?
“I really thought that any mask was better than nothing, as was the common sense of putting hands in front of the face,” said Dr. Eric Westman of Duke University.

Westman, an internal medicine specialist, didn’t have to deal with COVID-19 patients, but wanted to do something that could help stop the deadly spread of the virus.
He found Duke Health had a lot of personal protective equipment or PPE, but found some frontline workers such as bus drivers who were not.
He early believed that the mask would help stop the spread.
He raised tens of thousands of dollars in an online fundraiser and bought a mask for a front-line worker, but wasn’t sure which mask was most effective for his money.
He didn’t necessarily need the best N-95 masks for casual use, but he wanted to be as efficient as possible in whatever he purchased.
Westman knew that researchers had already found that coughs and sneezes released breathing droplets into the air.
“But how about talking?” he asked.

So he asked Martin Fisher, a professor of physics at Duke University, to test some types of masks.
Fisher made a simple box out of cardboard and provided an opening for the masked person to speak to.

“We attributed this to fleece, textiles, breaking those large particles into many smaller particles,” Fisher said. “They tend to hang longer in the air. Mr Fischer said his experiment was just a demonstration.
He and Dr. Westman hope further research will continue.
“This is really a pilot to something that needs more science to wrap it with other types of methods to measure particulate matter. We have stimulated other research on this, and nothing I hope to escape the idea of better, not.”
Westman said there are still many options for effective masks to serve front-line workers. He eventually spent the money raised to buy a mask that was not made of porous material.
