7-month-old baby dies from bacterial meningitis
Lubbock, Texas (KCBD/Gray News) – A 7-month-old infant died after being diagnosed with: bacterial meningitis And the flu at the same time.
Christopher Santos and his wife said their daughter Maya unexpectedly became ill on September 29th.
“Doctors told her she had a rhinovirus and compared it to a cold. They sent her home and told her to stay hydrated and control her pain and fever with over-the-counter medications. But there's not much we can do,” Santos said.
Santos said Maya seemed normal for a while, but suddenly things changed. As Maya's symptoms seemed to worsen, her parents took her back to the hospital.
“She had meningitis, but she also had the flu, which made the meningitis worse and eventually infected her brain,” Santos said.
Maya died a few days later.
Santos said that while parents don't have to bury their children, he believes the loss will make him a better father to his eldest daughter.
“I hug my oldest son a little tighter and give him a longer kiss. I tell myself I have to be more patient, I have to be more gentle,” Santos said.
Santos and his wife decided to donate Maya's organs to those in need.
“It meant a lot to my wife that Maya could live somewhere else and save our family from the pain that we're going through,” Santos said, adding that her organs will be shared with at least two families. He added that he had passed to
In support of Santos' family, an honor walk was held at Covenant Children's Hospital on Tuesday and a donor flag was raised in Santos' honor.
“It was very humbling to see everyone honoring Maya’s sacrifice. I never expected the community to come together and speak out so loudly for Maya. “It was,” Santos said.
Santos believes her story is proof that all parents should embrace and love their children more because tomorrow is not promised.
“I lie down and wish I had done more because it makes me sick to my stomach. I'm trying now with my oldest son not to live with that regret,” Santos said.
