In two New Jersey counties, people infected with measles may have infected others
A Monmouth County resident who recently returned from overseas travel has measles and may have exposed other Union and Monmouth County residents to the disease over an eight-day period prior to visiting a Jersey Shore hospital last week. The state health department announced Friday.
According to the state's announcement, the patient had visited the following locations:
- Livoti's Old World Market at 200 Mount Corner Dr. in Freehold on September 30th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm
- Oct. 1, El Rancho Mexican Restaurant, 28 West Main St., Freehold, 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.
- The International Longshoremen's Association held a day-long strike from October 1 to 3 in the area near the Elizabeth Chassis Depot and Welcome to Elizabeth Terminal, located at 1510 S. Bay Avenue in Elizabeth.
- Atlantic Health Immediate Care, 479 Route 520, Marlboro October 6th from 3pm to 6pm
- Jersey Shore University Medical Center – Emergency Department at 1945 Route 33 in Neptune City October 7th from 10am to 5pm
No other cases were reported as of Thursday, according to the release. This virus spreads easily when an infected person talks, coughs, or sneezes.
The announcement comes as health authorities are concerned about the rise in measles cases worldwide. Measles is Declared eliminated in the United States in 2000. Measles symptoms usually appear three to five days after exposure, but the health department said symptoms could appear as late as Oct. 29.
Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes, and a red rash that starts at the hairline. In severe cases, infected people may develop pneumonia or encephalitis. The Ministry of Health said pregnant women could miscarry or give birth to low birth weight babies.
Children attending schools and day care centers in New Jersey are required to receive two doses of the vaccine unless their parents or guardians request a medical or religious exemption.
