Pediatric pneumonia cases on the rise: What you need to know
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Hospitals are reporting a spike in pediatric pneumonia cases. Doctors are treating children ages 2 to 4 with a particular strain of the bacteria called Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
The Centers for Disease Control issued the alert as the number of infected people has been increasing across the country since October.
Mycoplasma pneumonia is commonly referred to as atypical pneumonia or walking pneumonia. That's because they are less prone to causing disease than standard strains.
Also, unlike the standard strain, it cannot be treated with penicillin, and another antibiotic is used instead.
Mycoplasma pneumonia can affect anyone, but doctors are concerned after the first confirmed case of the disease in a child between the ages of 2 and 4 this year.
Dr. Carlos Paxter, a pediatrician at My Carolina Children's in Rock Hill, said he sees about four cases a week in children ages 2 to 4. He also said that this time last year, visibility was zero.
Dr. Patrick Ryan Piedmont Medical Center in Fort Mill said the symptoms of mycoplasma are a dry, chronic cough without a runny nose or watery eyes.
He said the infection tends to be a mild infection, but it can be much worse, especially if the child has a lung disease such as asthma.
“It's basically a chronic cough. This persistent cough doesn't seem to go away. Another problem with mycoplasma is that it has a very long incubation time.
