Pertussis cases on the rise in Texas this year
Whooping cough cases in Texas have tripled this year. DSHS recommends vaccination and early treatment to prevent serious complications, especially in young children.
HOUSTON — The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) reported: Significant increase in pertussis (whooping cough) cases In 2024, infections increased across Texas, nearly tripling the number of infections compared to the same period in 2023. The ministry said the trend follows a nationwide surge, as preliminary data reveals a five-fold increase in cases this year.
Pertussis is a highly contagious bacterial disease that usually begins with cold-like symptoms but can progress to severe coughing fits that can cause vomiting and difficulty breathing. DSHS says infants and young children, especially children under the age of 1, are more susceptible to serious complications.
DSHS emphasized the importance of vaccination to prevent whooping cough. People of all ages, especially pregnant women, are encouraged to receive the Tdap vaccine during each pregnancy to protect their newborns. Although vaccinated people can still get whooping cough, vaccination remains the most effective preventative measure.
DSHS said anyone who suspects they have pertussis should stay home from work, school and public places until they have completed five days of antibiotic treatment.
This increase in pertussis cases signals a return to pre-pandemic trends as the number of cases recovers in 2024 after a lower-than-usual level during the COVID-19 pandemic. DSHS recommends timely vaccination, early detection, and appropriate treatment as important steps to limit the spread of pertussis and protect vulnerable populations.
