Recognize National Epilepsy Awareness Month
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month. Epilepsy is a disease that causes seizures.
1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy at some point during their lifetime. This disorder can affect anyone. More than 500,000 children in the United States have epilepsy.
People can develop epilepsy through genetics, meaning they may be predisposed to it, or epilepsy may be inherited in their family.
This disorder is basically caused by changes in the brain and brain activity.
If someone has multiple seizures, they may be diagnosed with epilepsy.
There are drugs called antiepileptic drugs that can be used to treat this disorder.
Dr. Ashley Cheek, a pediatrician at Memorial Hospital, says these drugs are very effective in treating seizures. Some people with this disorder are able to live seizure-free lives with medication.
Dr Cheek says raising epilepsy awareness will help people recognize when someone is having a seizure. She also shares life-saving advice on what you can do to help people in that situation.
“A seizure is an abnormal movement or loss of consciousness, manifested by foaming at the mouth or violent shaking of limbs or similar objects for a period of time,” Cheek said. “And if you witness something like that happening, the first thing you have to do is stay put and make sure the area is safe for children. If the child becomes unconscious, roll the child onto his side and call 9-1-1.
WTOC spoke with a person who has epilepsy. They shared that National Epilepsy Awareness Month is great because it breaks down the stigma around this disorder.
Tedra Sierra Ford said, “I believe that more people suffer from epilepsy than people realize. I encourage everyone to be kind and respectful to others who may be suffering from seizures and epilepsy.'' , I hope people will be considerate and considerate,” he said.
