This is based on the concept that the time between detection of a lung nodule by CT scan and biopsy may be reduced, potentially speeding diagnosis. Ion's ultra-thin, highly maneuverable catheters allow clinicians to reach small lesions in the peripheral lungs, where more than 70% of cancerous lung nodules reside.

He explains that treatment options and prognosis vary depending on the stage of the disease, and lymph nodes from the chest are often required to determine if lung cancer is present. “The ability to take a lymph node sample and determine the stage in the same procedure speeds diagnosis and treatment,” Dr. Lenibee says.
