Diabetes drugs may help people drink less, study suggests
A diabetes drug that appears to target the brain's reward center may be effective in reducing alcohol intake in the future, new research suggests.
Researchers at the University of Nottingham analyzed whether a type of diabetes drug known as a GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) could help reduce alcohol intake.

In the RCT, participants took exenatide, a GLP-1 RA, or a placebo for 24 weeks. There was no significant decrease in alcohol consumption over 30 days in either group. There were more heavy drinking days in the placebo group, but the difference was not statistically significant. However, subgroup analyzes showed that in obese individuals (BMI > 30 kg/m²) exenatide intake had a positive effect on cue reactivity in the brain's reward center when participants were shown alcohol-related cues. We found that it decreased significantly.
Dr Mohsen Subhani, clinical assistant professor of gastroenterology at the School of Medicine's NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Center, said: “Our findings demonstrate that this type of diabetes drug potentially targets the brain's reward center. “This shows promise in reducing alcohol intake.” It occurs in people with a BMI greater than 30.
