Fresno, California – a California A resident died after being bitten by a potentially rabid bat, state health officials said.

The victim, from Fresno County, died late last week after exhibiting symptoms of rabies, according to the California Department of Public Health.

Officials said the victim was bitten by a bat in Merced County a month before his death.

He was hospitalized in Fresno County in mid-November, and state and local health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigated rabies as a possible cause of his illness.

Traces of rabies were found in samples taken from the patient.

Health officials noted that rabies deaths in the United States are rare, with fewer than 10 cases reported annually, but recommended preventive measures.

“Bat bites are incredibly small and can be difficult to see or detect. It’s important to wash your hands after touching wild animals and look for open wounds. If you are bitten, it is important to seek medical attention immediately,” said CDPH Director Dr. Dominick. Thomas J. Aragon. “It's always safest to leave wild animals alone. Don't approach, touch or try to feed unknown animals.”
