Fresno-area teacher dies of rabies after being bitten by a bat in classroom, health officials confirm
Fresno County, California — A Fresno-area art teacher has died of rabies a month after being apparently bitten by a bat in her classroom, health officials said.
Friends said Leah Senen, 60, found a bat in her classroom in mid-October and tried to bring it back outside.
“I don't know if she thought it was dead or what, because it was lying around the classroom and she was trying to scoop it up and take it outside,” said the longtime friend. said Laura Sprott. “She didn't want to harm it, but then she woke up or saw a light or something and took off in a little bit of a swoop.”
She showed no symptoms of rabies in the days following the attack. But about a month later, Senen became unwell and his daughter took him to the hospital, where he soon fell into a coma.
Four days later, on November 22, Mr. Senen passed away.
“It's really shocking to see her in that condition, with all the machines hooked up and everything hooked up. It was pretty upsetting and scary,” Splotch said. I did.
This is the first human death from rabies in Fresno County since 1992, officials said.
Senen taught at Bryant Middle School in Dos Palos, Merced County.
Fresno County Public Health says there is no threat to the public at this time.
“To date, vaccines have been administered to both health care workers and household contacts,” Fresno County officials said.
Fresno County and Merced County Health Departments continue to investigate other possible infections.
Ms. Sproch has known Ms. Sennen for about 15 years, ever since their children became friends in kindergarten.
She said Leah's kind demeanor and love of art brought the two women together.
“She was a person who loved life. She spent a lot of time in the mountains where her mother lived. She loved exploring the world and was a great explorer,” Splotch said. .
Senen was an artist.
Sprock said she turned that passion into a career as an art teacher, most recently working at Bryant.
As Sennen's friends and family mourn her passing, a gift from a longtime friend to Splotch serves as a reminder of her talent and vigor in life.
“I'm so happy that she thought of me and posted these exact words. It meant so much to me. It means so much to me now.” Sprock said.
