Oshkosh woman raises awareness about SAD

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Stephanie Carlin likes to stay busy. In addition to being a member of the Oshkosh School Board, she also teaches at the Oshkosh Senior Center and works as a flight attendant.
“My son is the reason I became a flight attendant,” Carlin said. “He was going to school in Colorado, so I was like, 'I have to be available to see him.'
Karlin finds that spending time doing something, especially during the winter months, helps her cope with depression. The change of seasons is an opportunity for her.
“You can go down the rabbit hole of, 'I didn't do this this summer, I didn't do that,'” Karlin said. “Oh my god, it's getting colder and colder. I have to work hard to keep my mental health from deteriorating.”
So this year, long before daylight hours and cold weather arrived, she wrote down her plans.
“I signed up for a pickleball league to make sure I wasn’t isolated,” Carlin said. “I've never played pickleball before. I'm going to play pickleball every Thursday until February.”
She also scheduled weekly check-ins with her friends.
“We’ve been checking in every Monday for five and a half years…” Carlin said. “I just say hi. It keeps me connected to people because when you're depressed you can feel isolated.”
She also sought help from a mental health professional.
“Think about low mood, decreased interest in activities, weight gain or loss, fatigue, etc.,” says Dr. Heather Jones, vice president of clinical services at Rogers Behavioral Health.
Seasonal affective disorder, also known as SAD, is prevalent in Wisconsin this time of year, Dr. Jones said. This is a type of depression caused by a lack of natural light and time outdoors.
She recommended working with regular movements and being creative when exposed to light.
“It's light therapy, so you use happy light to exercise,” Jones said. “At this time of year, it can be difficult to get out and exercise because it's dark when you wake up and it's dark when you get home. Eating healthy is key.”
Karlin knows how important it is to recognize mental health issues and seek help. Her goal is to shine a light on this dark issue and inspire others to deal with depression year-round.
“My brother didn't have a lot of access to mental health resources and ended up dying by suicide,” Carlin said. “I feel really lucky to have access to the Rogers facility.”
