HMPV in China: Delhi health authorities advise in preparation for surge in infections
Delhi health authorities have issued recommendations to address potential health problems arising from human metapneumovirus (HMPV), which is reported to be spreading rapidly in China. Director General of Health Services Dr Vandana Bagga on Sunday convened a meeting with district medical officers and state program directors of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) to discuss preparedness in Delhi.
This preparedness is not only for HMPV, but also for other respiratory viruses. Hospitals are asked to promptly report cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) through the IHIP portal. Strict isolation protocols and the use of universal precautions for suspected cases are mandatory.
Hospitals are also required to maintain adequate documentation of SARI cases and laboratory-confirmed influenza cases. They have also been asked to ensure the availability of paracetamol, antihistamines, bronchodilators, cough syrups and oxygen needed to treat mild cases.
The advisory was made following reports of an increase in respiratory illnesses in China. As of January 2, India has not seen any significant increase in respiratory illnesses so far, the statement said.
