Pennington researchers say new diagnosis could help treat obesity
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Two out of three people in Louisiana are considered obese or overweight. The state ranks fourth in the nation for childhood obesity rates. As weight loss drugs like Ozempic become a routine solution to overeating habits, researchers at Pennington Biomedical Research Center are collaborating with academics around the world to change the way we think about obesity treatment. Dr. John Kirwan is a managing director at Pennington.
“BMI doesn't tell you about a person's body composition,” Kirwan says. “This actually measures your height and weight. So it's a great tool for screening, but it doesn't give you a measure of fat accumulation – how much fat you have and where the fat is located. We can't. We need it to diagnose it, but so far we haven't defined it as anything that special.”
Today, that definition is becoming clearer.
“We don't want to overtreat. We don't want to underestimate,” Kirwan said.
Distinguish between preclinical and clinical obesity. Dr. Philipp Schauer treats people with obesity.
“They have preclinical obesity. They clearly need to be monitored and we need to provide prevention strategies,” Schauer said.
Next, consider whether excess fat is causing negative health effects such as shortness of breath, joint pain, or even organ dysfunction.
“And these are the people who need to focus on more aggressive treatments to resolve their symptoms,” Schauer said.
Eating better and exercising more is always beneficial, he said, but for some people it's also a genetic issue.
“People who are obese have a much stronger appetite and have much reduced satiety signals. By satiety, we mean feeling full.”
Ozempic and other weight loss drugs limit signals in the brain to suppress excessive cravings.
“If you ask anyone who takes these drugs or has had surgery, they'll tell you that after their treatment they feel much less hungry, they don't want to eat as much, and they feel full faster,” Schauer said. Ta.
Mr Pennington and the Lancet Commission say there is no one size fits all when it comes to obesity, finding a gray area between black and white.
