Coronavirus: The more people know about COVID-19, the less pandemic-related stress

Knowledge is Power: The Study Finds The More People Know About COVID-19 The Less Pandemic-Related Stress They Have

  • Experts surveyed 515 US adults for knowledge of COVID-19 and stress levels
  • They have found that knowledge helps reduce uncertainty and minimizes stress
  • Stress was caused by the fear of catching the coronavirus—increased with age
  • However, the team has found that planning can help relieve stress in adults over 52

More people know about novels Coronavirus When pandemic-related stress diminished, a study of 515 US adults was completed.

Researchers at Ohio State University have found that learning more about the virus can help people reduce anxiety and stress.

They also found that older age and the corresponding susceptibility to COVID-19 led to more stress, but older people can combat this by planning.

But this strategy of so-called “preventive coping” did not help young adults.

The more people knew about the new coronavirus, the less pandemic-related stress eventually ended, ending the study of 515 adults in the United States (Stock Image).

“COVID-19 is a new illness that was not previously a concern,” said Shevaun Neupert, a psychologist at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

“So we wanted to see how people were reacting and coping with this new source of stress,” she added.

To investigate, Professor Neupert and his colleagues voted for 515 US adults between the ages of 20 and 79 between March 20 and April 19, 2020.

The study assessed participants’ stress and anxiety levels for pandemics, but also included a 29-item quiz designed to assess how well each volunteer knew about COVID-19.

“We know that knowledge is power,” added Professor Neupert.

“The more factual information people know about COVID-19, the less stress they had. That was true for all age groups,” she added.

“Knowledge reduces uncertainty, and uncertainty can be very stressful.

“Although speculative, knowledge of this new virus seems to have reduced uncertainty and, as a result, reduced sentiment for pandemic stress.”

They also found that increasing age and corresponding susceptibility to COVID-19 led to more stress, but that older people could counter this by planning (stock image).

They also found that increasing age and corresponding susceptibility to COVID-19 led to more stress, but that older people could counter this by planning (stock image).

The researchers were surprised to find that pandemic-related stress levels were similar for all age groups. However, the disease is understood to be particularly dangerous for the elderly.

The strongest predictor of stress was concern about acquisition of COVID-19. The older the person, the more pronounced this effect was,” said Professor Neupert.

However, the findings revealed that adults over the age of 52 benefited from so-called “preventive coping”-planning to reduce the likelihood of stress-to the anxiety they felt. Helped to counter.

In contrast, this strategy did not appear to bring similar benefits to young adults.

“These results suggest that everyone can benefit from continuing to engage in factual information that will increase knowledge about COVID-19,” said Professor Neupert.

“In addition, older people who can use prophylactic coping strategies, such as trying to prepare for adverse events, can reduce pandemic stress.”

The complete result of the study is Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences..

British Government Face Cover Advice

If possible, wear something that covers your face in a closed space where you can’t stay socially separated and come into contact with people you don’t normally meet.

This is most relevant indoors for short periods of time in crowded areas such as public transport and some stores.

Evidence suggests that wearing a face cover does not protect you.

However, if you are infected but still not symptomatic, it may provide some protection to others in close contact.

Face covering does not replace social distance. If you have symptoms of COVID-19 (cough or high temperature), you and your family should be isolated at home. This does not change even if you cover your face.

Face covers are different from surgical masks and masks used by health care workers and other workers as part of their personal protective equipment.

These must continue to be reserved for those at work, such as health and care workers, and those who need to be protected from risks in an industrial environment where they are at risk of dust.

Face coverings should not be used by children under the age of 2 or by those who find it difficult to manage properly. For example, children of primary age who are not subsidized or have respiratory illness.

It is important to use the face covering properly and wash your hands before putting it on and off.

You can cover your face at home. The important thing is to cover your mouth and nose.
