Washtenaw County, Michigan (Fox 2) – The first case of chronic wasteful dias (CWD), a fatal neurological disease affecting deer, has recently been confirmed Washtenau County.

The disease was discovered during animal testing as part of the deer CWD surveillance program, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

DNR said the adult Buck is sick in Salem Township. The CWD was confirmed in two labs that tested deer.

A CWD confirmation makes Washtenau County the 15th Michigan state where a case of the disease has been confirmed. Other counties where cases were confirmed include Clinton, Dickinson, Eaton, Gratiot, Hillsdale, Ingham, Ionia, Isabella, Jackson, Kent, Mecosta, Midland, Montcalm and Ogemou.

The DNR noted that the CWD was first discovered in Washtenaw County, but that neighboring Jackson County tested 39 positive deer against the CWD.

“The expansion of chronic wasteful disease into Washtenau County is consistent with the slow spread we saw across Michigan,” said Chadfedewa, an expert in DNR Deer, Elk and Moose Management. “This incident was identified thanks to residents who saw a deer that looked sick and reported it to us. All data helps us make science-based decisions to support Michigan wildlife. We are grateful that Michigan residents are cherishing their deer and keeping engaged in this way.”

Prior to targeted surveillance in the county, 824 deer tests were conducted by voluntary sampling between 2016 and 2019. In 2021 and 2022, a concentrated CWD surveillance effort was implemented to collect additional samples, with an additional 875 deer being tested.

The DNR said more than 109,000 deer have been tested for Michigan CWD as chronic wasteful disease was first detected in wild deer in 2015. In total, over 143,000 wild deer were tested and 261 CWD-positive deer were identified through a DNR surveillance effort that began in 2002. Additionally, as direct deer submissions of deer were launched at the MSU Institute in 2020, more than 3,000 submitted samples resulted in 55 additional confirmed positives.

Mdard said there have been no reported cases of CWD infection in humans. However, as a precaution, the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that CWD-infected animals should not be consumed as food by either humans or livestock.
