Experts have found that the physical task of smiling activates certain muscles in a person’s cheeks, which causes positive emotions in the brain.

Scientists say this has a significant impact on mental health and can be exploited to help people deal with stress.

“When you say your muscles are happy, you’re more likely to look positively at the world around you,” said Fernando Marmore Horamos, co-author of research at the University of South Australia.

“Our study found that when you practice a vigorous smile, it stimulates the amygdala (the emotional center of the brain), releasing neurotransmitters that promote an emotionally positive state. ..

“For mental health, this has interesting implications.

“If you can trick your brain into perceiving the stimulus as “happy,” you can potentially use this mechanism to increase your mental health. “

Participants in the study were asked to hold a pen between their teeth without touching the item with their lips, in order to force the cheek muscles to trigger.

Volunteers from Japan, Poland and Sweden were instructed to study the faces and features of the 11 images.

Next, participants examined physical function in 11 video clips outlining walking people.

This study evaluated how this information was processed when people were forced to smile and face was relaxed.

Those who were forced to smile, both in face and body analysis, were flooded with more positive emotions.

“In a nutshell, emotional processing of stimuli intertwines the perceptual and motor systems,” says Dr. Marmoreholamos.

“It’s fake until you make it! The approach can have more credit than we expect.”
