Bird flu reported in Mississippi, chicken owners asked to protect their flocks
MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, Ark. (KAIT) – Officials have culled an entire flock of chickens in Mississippi County after the latest case of bird flu was confirmed in Arkansas.

Migration patterns increase risk of infection
Several extension offices closely monitor waterfowl migration patterns, which can significantly increase the risk of avian influenza infection.
“We're on the Mississippi flyway, so the more cars you have on the highway, the more likely you are to get into an accident,” said Murrayha Cook, county extension agent with Craighead County Extension Service. “So it's the same concept. Herd management is very important now.”
This threat extends beyond migration patterns. Mr Cook said infected water could be brought into poultry farms as the rainy season approaches, and the potential for contamination was very high.
“It takes one gram of feces from an infected bird to disrupt about one million birds,” Cook said.
Chicken owner begins preparations
Chicken owners in Mississippi County are already taking precautions.
Keith Beeson has 17 chickens. After several chickens participated in a recent show, they were isolated from other chickens as a precaution.
“We noticed that one of them was starting to cough a little bit, so we took it away from the other two people who attended the show,” Beeson said. “We're just monitoring. Hopefully, he's on the mend. Nothing too crazy. We're just trying to be as careful as possible.”
The chicken was isolated in its own area away from other chickens.
For Beeson and his family, the outbreak would be devastating. His flock lays about eight eggs each day, providing food for his immediate family as well as extended family and friends.
Bird flu prevention tips
Cook said poultry owners can take proactive steps to protect their flocks from infection.
“Specify shoes only for going to the poultry farm. Don't wear those shoes outside,” Cook says. “Be sure to limit the number of people who have access to your herd itself.”
