The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment is reminding Colorado residents to prepare for cold and flu season, saying influenza cases could start appearing earlier than usual in Colorado, according to a news release from the department.

Trends in other parts of the world show that cases of influenza are occurring faster than expected. The flu arrived in Japan five weeks earlier than usual, with “far more” cases than in recent years and widespread spread, “resulting in the closure of more than 100 schools across the country,” Matt Bauer, manager of infectious diseases, emergency preparedness and response, said in a statement.

In southern hemisphere countries such as Australia and New Zealand, influenza season lasts from May to October. According to the announcement, both countries reported higher levels of influenza this year than usual.

Who should get the influenza, COVID-19, and RSV vaccine?

• Influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations are recommended for everyone six months of age and older, according to the county health department.
• The RSV vaccine is recommended for the following people:
  • Adults over 75 years old.
  • People with underlying health conditions.
  • Those between 32nd and 36th week of pregnancy.
  • Infants whose mothers did not receive the vaccine between 32 and 36 weeks of gestation.
