Health officials say measles patient traveled through RDU terminal | WFAE 90.7
State and local health officials said a person infected with measles traveled through Terminal 2 at Raleigh-Durham International Airport last week.
The person lives in another state, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and Wake County. Officials said there were no ongoing health risks identified at RDU as of this week.
The disclosure comes as South Carolina continues to grapple with a growing measles outbreak centered in Spartanburg County. South Carolina state epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell urged residents to make sure they get vaccinated at a news conference this week.
Of the outbreak-related cases in South Carolina where vaccination status is known, 94% of those infected had not been vaccinated, Bell said. He said the statistics highlight how effective the measles vaccine is in preventing infection and curbing the spread of the virus.
Bell added that two doses of the measles vaccine generally provide lifelong immunity.
Health officials continue to stress that measles is highly contagious and can be spread by coughing and sneezing, especially in unvaccinated people.
