West Nile virus risk level increased from low to moderate in Quincy
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) confirmed Thursday that the West Nile virus (WNV) risk level had been raised from low to moderate in Quincy, Massachusetts. There were four WNV positive mosquito samples (pools) identified from the samples collected at Quincy (Squid/Thysanium complex and Culex pipiens). To date, in 2020, the state has reported a pool of 64 WNV-positive mosquitoes from 5 counties. This includes 14 positive pools from Norfolk County. A moderate designation indicates that the WNV infection is likely or has already occurred.
WNV can infect people of all ages, but people over the age of 50 are at increased risk of severe infections. WNV is most commonly transmitted to humans by being bitten by a virus-infected mosquito. Quincy City Department of Health and MDPH recommend that the public behaved to prevent mosquito bites and reduce the number of mosquitoes at home and in the neighborhood.
- Limit outdoor time during peak mosquito activity (dusk and dawn) or wear long-sleeved shirts and pants if you need to stay outdoors.
- Use mosquito repellent containing DEET or picaridine. Lemon eucalyptus oil may also be considered. Products containing permethrin should only be used on clothing. Always follow the label instructions. Repellents should not be used on children younger than 2 months. Lemon eucalyptus oil should not be used by children under 3 years of age.
- Take special care to cover the arms and legs of children playing outdoors. When bringing your baby outdoors, cover the pram or playpen with a mosquito net.
- Fix all holes in the screen and make sure they are firmly attached to all doors and windows.
- Remove all water around the house that can be used to breed mosquitoes. Mosquitoes begin to breed in any puddle or standing water that lasts more than 4 days. Do not allow water to accumulate in ceramic pots, trash cans, recycling containers, old tires, water play areas, bird baths, etc. Remove leaves and debris that can prevent drainage from the gutter.
