Nebraska hantavirus quarantine extended until end of month :: WRAL.com
North Carolina health officials say passengers who were exposed to the hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius and are quarantined in Nebraska will remain in Nebraska until at least the end of the month.
Scott Schoen, director of the North Carolina State Public Health Laboratory, said the state received an update late Monday with a passenger in quarantine in Nebraska. He said the additional time would allow authorities to continue preparing for when the passengers eventually return home.
“That helps with the attitude and preparation of plans for when that person will come back or what the next steps are in response to the outbreak,” Sean said.
Sean said local and state health officials are working closely with federal partners.
“Transportation options are being considered through the federal government in collaboration with state and local partners,” Sean said. “This is a source of continuous review and communication. I think the communication throughout this process from the local level through the federal level to make sure we’re all ready for whatever the next step is.”
Hantavirus is a rare disease usually caused by contact with infected rodent feces.
Mr Sean reiterated that the risk of infection to the general public remains “very small”.
“It is unlikely that the general public in North Carolina will need to be tested for this virus or hantaviruses in general,” he said. “The last case of hantavirus in North Carolina was in 1995, but that was a very rare event.”
Passengers on the MV Hondius are being specifically monitored for the Andean strain of hantavirus. Andes is the only strain of hantavirus known to be transmitted from person to person and can cause severe respiratory illness.

The North Carolina Public Health Laboratory does not currently have the capacity to test for the Andean strain. Sean said the suspect samples will be sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for analysis.

State health officials also shared that past outbreaks like Ebola have helped refine responses to emerging infectious diseases.
“Every time we go through this, we learn something new,” Sean said. “We’re learning about testing, we’re learning about how these pathogens are spread, we’re learning how to better communicate risk, what we know and don’t know about the situation.”
He continued, “Every single one of them has been a learning experience. I think the North Carolina public health system is doing a great job of making sure we’re clear, communicating and making sure we’re here to protect North Carolinians.”
