Ugandan health authorities report new Ebola virus infection, bringing the number of infected people to seven
KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) – Ugandan health authorities on Monday reported two new cases of Ebola, bringing the total number of cases to seven.
All cases are linked to an outbreak in neighboring Congo, which appears to have begun days or weeks before Congolese authorities announced the outbreak on May 15.
A 59-year-old Congolese man was admitted to a hospital in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, on May 11 and died three days later before being diagnosed with the Ebola virus. Two other Congolese people who sought treatment in Uganda later tested positive for Ebola.
Ugandan health authorities confirmed the first local infection on Saturday. The driver and health worker had been in contact with a Congolese patient who died on May 11. Two more health workers at a private hospital in Kampala have since tested positive, the Ministry of Health announced on Monday.

“Both patients have been admitted to designated treatment units and are currently receiving treatment,” National Health Services Director Dr. Charles Olaro said in a statement.
President Yoweri Museveni has called on Ugandans to “stop shaking hands” as part of measures to avoid infection. The prime minister also ordered the postponement of the annual religious event, where thousands of pilgrims from Congo and other countries gather around a Catholic cathedral on the outskirts of Kampala, until June 3.

Other measures include suspending all public transport and flights between Congo and Uganda.
More than 900 people have been suspected of having Ebola in Congo, mainly in the eastern province of Ituri, where the outbreak continues, authorities announced on Sunday. In a region long plagued by armed violence, the response is hampered by local fear, anger and frustration, including attacks on treatment centres, as well as distrust of authorities.
Congo has experienced more than a dozen Ebola outbreaks over several decades. Health experts say international aid cuts by the United States and other rich countries last year have had a devastating impact on eastern Congo because of problems endemic to the region.
Aid groups fighting the Ebola outbreak say they lack essential equipment, including face shields and suits to protect health workers from infection, testing kits, body bags and other materials needed to safely bury the bodies of highly contagious victims.
There is no approved vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo Ebola virus that is causing the outbreak. The outbreak was declared a global health emergency.
Tracing and isolating Ebola contacts is believed to be key to stopping the spread of the disease, which usually manifests as a hemorrhagic fever.
According to the World Health Organization, fruit bats are thought to be the natural host for the virus that causes Ebola. Ebola is spread through contact with the body fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials.
