Attack of “flesh-eating” bacteria

However, as the Earth’s temperature and weather patterns change, it has become clear that there is another category of affected organisms that has clearly escaped my attention. Microorganisms are the most dominant life form on Earth.
Some microorganisms make us sick. There are many other things that help our bodies function and keep the planet running. Microorganisms produce oxygen in the atmosphere, break down waste products, and help plants absorb nutrients. Additionally, they are also master adapters. When the ecosystems they live in change, they change much faster and much better than humans.
For almost a year I started learning how climate change is changing the microbial world. In some cases, global warming means microorganisms become more dangerous to humans. Pathogens such as bacteria that “eat people” vibrio vulnificusare becoming increasingly abundant as they thrive in warm waters. Fungi, on the other hand, prefer to grow at cooler temperatures. This means that the human body is so hot that it is largely protected from fungal diseases. But as the climate warms, some fungi may have a chance to overcome that temperature barrier. And many other beneficial and harmless microorganisms will also adapt, with far-reaching and unknown effects. “Our Earth is a test tube,” one biologist told me. “A little bit more warmth makes all the difference.”
