DeKalb Health officials report first West Nile virus incident in 2020

Decatur, Georgia – The DeKalb County Health Commission confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus infection in the county this year.
A patient, a woman in her 60s, lives in the East Lake Terrace area of the unincorporated Decatur. There is currently no additional information available as the investigation is still in progress.
Last year, one human case of West Nile virus in DeKalb County was confirmed on September 13.
Due to COVID-19, the Health Care Commission does not implement the usual door-to-door canvas of the affected area. Application of larvicides in lowland areas and storm drains has already taken place in several parts of the county, including the area where the incident is present. Prevent larvae from flying larvae and biting adults.
According to the CDC, West Nile and COVID-19 share similar symptoms, but there is no data or scientific evidence to suggest that COVID-19 or other similar coronaviruses are spread by mosquitoes. To reduce mosquitoes in and around your home:

To prevent mosquito bites:
- Mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus reduce outdoor exposure at the most active dawn and dusk.
- Use DEET, picaridine, lemon eucalyptus oil, or repellents including IR3535. Apply according to the label instructions.
- Spray clothing with a product containing permethrin. Also, apply according to the instructions on the label.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk, and in areas with high mosquitoes.
