Coronavirus Chicago: Preliminary results of antibody studies at the University of Northwestern found that 20% of Chicago citizens carry COVID-19 antibodies.
Preliminary results from a blood test study at Northwestern University conclude that 20% of Chicago citizens have antibodies to the coronavirus.
“The majority of the people we work with have no or, if any, mild symptoms,” said Dr. Elizabeth McNally, director of medical genetics at the Northwestern School of Medicine. Stated.
Northwestern University has taken blood spot samples from residents at 10 zip codes in Chicago. The neighborhood was divided into a combination of high and low COVID-19 cases.
“While the diagnostic rates for COVID infections vary, the rates based on antibody tests are not so different,” said Dr. Thomas McDade, a researcher at Northwestern University.
The 20% rate was consistent with tests conducted on all zip codes and workers in the northwestern medical school.
“What we think this means is that there are far more exposures than people know,” McNally said.
What researchers don’t know is whether people had enough positive virus to pass it on to others.
The simple household blood prick test used in this study is much more sensitive and accurate than the commercial antibody test developed months ago using highly ill COVID patients.
“It was important to do a functional test against the lower levels of antibodies we see in the community,” McNally said.
Northwestern is in the process of expanding its investigation to include all Chicago zip codes. The goal is to secure 10,000 participants and have them participate in the study for a sufficient period of time to determine the duration of the antibody.
“The $ 64,000 question is for people who have been exposed to non-clinical cases of the disease, will they be protected?” McDade said.
Reachers said it is important to understand antibody protection until the vaccine is widely available.
