Scientists say overnight pills can stop your partner from snoring

If your partner snores, you’re probably accustomed to sleepless nights with pillows placed tightly on your ears.

But thanks to the new once-night pill, the days of not being so gently nudged to keep your partner quiet can be a thing of the past.

A pill called AD109 was developed by the pharmaceutical company Apnimed for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. snore I stopped breathing at night.

Dr. Larry Miller, CEO of Apnimed, said: “Obstructive sleep apnea represents a serious public health problem in the United States and around the world, and current treatment options do not meet patient needs.

“We believe that AD109, a candidate for oral medication given once daily at bedtime, could be a major advance for these patients.”

Current treatments for sleep apnea include devices such as unpleasant mouthguards or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices that blow air through a mask worn at night.

Alternatively, according to the British Lung Foundation, this is only useful in a handful of cases, but some patients may be offered surgery.

Dr. Miller added that AD109 provides patients with “a simple, safe and effective solution that does not require CPAP equipment or surgery.”

AD109 targets neurotransmitter levels in the central nervous system, activates upper airway muscles, and keeps the airways open during sleep.

Taken once daily at bedtime, it can be used to treat patients with mild to severe snoring problems.

So far, the drug is undergoing Phase I clinical trials, during which time 24 healthy adult volunteers were given the drug for at least 7 days.

Thankfully, the results showed that the drug was well tolerated and had no side effects.

Apnimed is currently hoping to begin Phase II trials. The study will test the drug in 140 patients.

Dr. Miller added: “We look forward to launching Phase 2 trials with AD109 in the fourth quarter of this year.”
