Experts warn that viral deaths will increase in the north, but infections will decrease
Northern Ireland Executive said Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a four-week blockade in Britain, leaving him on the road to tackling the second wave of Covid-19.
Thousands of students returned to the classroom this week at the end of a long mid-term break after the North Ministry of Health announced eight more deaths and 685 new cases.
Dr. Connor Banford, a virologist at Queen’s University Belfast, warned that the next two weeks would be important in determining whether an executive school “experiment” was successful.
“The death toll is likely to rise in the next two weeks,” he warned. “But I hope the restrictions will be enforced at the right time.
“We are already beginning to see a decline in the number of cases, which is positive. This shows that the restrictions enforced seem to be working.
“To reduce the infection rate, it is always better to respond early.
“England was only one of four countries [of the UK] As they did not, they had to impose stronger restrictions over a longer period of time.
“I hope Northern Ireland doesn’t have to go that way, but the next two weeks are important.
“Schools are coming back, but there are still no clear signs of how much schools have affected the rise in infection rates.”
After Prime Minister Arlene Foster said Northern Ireland had to adapt to coexistence with the virus, a spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office added:
“The impact of these measures on the epidemic process is being monitored and ministers will consider progress at the Executive Council next week.”
Mid Ulster, Belfast and Delhi continue to be the worst affected areas.
Pressure on North Korea’s health care system is now at critical levels as there are no ICU beds left at both Altnagelvin Hospital and Belfast Municipal Hospital in Delhi. The other two hospitals, Mater Hospital and Ulster Hospital, currently operate beyond the capacity of the entire bed they occupy.
