Italy expands tougher COVID-19 curbs to Tuscany and four other regions

Rome (Reuters)-Italy has tightened restrictions on the coronavirus in Tuscany and four other regions that came into force on Wednesday to curb the second wave of the pandemic, health ministry sources said Monday.

Last week, the government imposed a national curb, including a curfew, divided the country into three zones based on the intensity of the COVID-19 outbreak, and adjusted additional restrictions accordingly.

Tuscany, including the cities of Florence and Siena. Liguria; Abruzzo; Umbria and the southern region of Basilicata are designated as the “Orange Zone”, with bars and restaurants closed, but shops still open. People are free to move around in their towns and cities, but they cannot leave.

Zoning depends on factors such as local infection rates and hospital occupancy. Most of Milan and the northern industrial areas are part of the “red zone” under partial blockade.

Sources added that the northern province of Bolzano was added to the Red Zone.

The southern regions of Apulia and Sicily were already part of the Orange Zone.

Italy, the first European country to be hit hard by COVID-19, curbed its outbreak after severe blockades in March and April, but again following the resurgence of infection and death. Strengthened the curb.

Italy registered 25,271 new infections on Monday, mainly due to the customary reduction in daily tests on Sunday, after 32,616 the previous day. According to the Ministry of Health, there were 356 COVID-related deaths.

The steady surge in hospitalizations is straining the country’s health system, and doctors warn that Italy could suffer about 10,000 deaths next month with current trends.

“The situation can be tragic …. radical measures such as a complete blockade are needed,” said Filippo Anelli, president of the Italian Federation of Physicians.
