New antiviral tested against COVID-19
Researchers at Georgia State University are diverting antiviral drugs to study their effectiveness against the coronavirus.
Atlanta — Experimental antiviral drugs originally developed to treat influenza are being reused to fight the new coronavirus.
Professor Richard Plumper led a team at Georgia State University to test ferrets with antiviral Mornupyrabir. He says that the airways of ferrets are almost in line with the airways of humans.
Plemper says that when COVID-19-infected ferrets treated with antivirals were placed in the group of non-infected ferrets, medical institutions seemed to quickly prevent the transmission of the virus.
“What we found was that none of these co-reared animals were infected with the virus,” says Plemper. “And in controls that were not treated with drugs and were treated with the vehicle placebo, all contacts of the animals in those controls were infected within 24 hours.”
Antivirals are currently in clinical trials in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 complications.
If it proves to be effective, it may provide another tool, says Dr. Plemper: This is a manageable pill.
Most of the FDA-approved COVID-19 treatments need to be infused by IV, making it difficult to deliver them outside the medical environment, such as in hospitals.
“So you can take this medicine faster,” says Plemper. “No medical assistance is needed for hospitalization or management. I think it can really prevent or reduce the patient’s chances of developing a serious illness.”

It’s still early, Plemper warns, but he hopes the drug will provide another tool to stop the transmission of this highly contagious virus.
“I think this drug is likely to make a meaningful contribution,” he says. “Of course, it should be noted that these are animal experiments. I think the ferret model is a good model, but in the end we have to wait for human data.”
Currently, remdesivir is the only FDA-approved antiviral drug for the treatment of COVID-19.
