Florida Atlantic University Researchers Test Wastewater for Signs of COVID-19

Researchers at Florida Atlantic University are tracking COVID-19 on campus by testing wastewater for signs of the virus.

“People used the toilet, flushed the COVID-19 virus and found its debris in the wastewater,” explained Frederick Brocher.

Bloetscher is a professor of engineering at the FAU campus in Boca Raton.

Contact 5 tagged as Bloetscher and some graduate students traveled around the campus to collect wastewater samples to test for traces of the coronavirus.

“He literally puts it in raw wastewater, takes a sample and pour it into a sample bottle,” Bloetscher explained.

Bloetscher told Contact 5 that “the amount of COVID was quite low” when the test started a few months ago. However, the concentration is increasing over time.

Samples collected by Bloetscher and graduate students are kept cool and transported to campus labs. Over the course of several days, these samples are spun down, concentrated, extracted, and finally placed on a PCR machine.

“Past samples taken a few weeks ago have skyrocketed,” Brocher said. “This mimics what is found in almost every other university in the United States.”

On the day of contact 5, the results of the samples collected showed a decrease in COVID-19 levels from 2 weeks ago. Bloetscher said it was a sign that few people on campus had the coronavirus.

“We’re not saying we’re not doing anything with that information,” Brocher explained. “If we track it and see the spikes continue, if anyone wants to find a solution to do, you have the data to support it.”

Currently, Bloetscher wants to test the sample in a nearby community.

“We have already contacted several municipalities,” Bloetscher said. “The idea is that we can provide this kind of service to local governments, who can track what COVIDs look like in the community.”
