Finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel we have been through for the last nine months. We are learning the details and timeline of how kids can get back to school, get back to work, and barbecue with their families without endangering the lives of their loved ones.

Light comes in the form of vaccines-actually some vaccines. The scientific consensus is that when 70% of the population is vaccinated (or COVIDed), “herd immunity” is reached. This is likely to happen by next summer.

We need to play our part in order to return to a welcome normal state. To get the vaccine. I would like to encourage our community to prepare for it.

Vaccines are well known as one of the top 10 public health achievements of the 20th century. The speed and efficiency that the scientific community has gathered to create a new vaccine for COVID-19 is amazing, but without the 18 years of research that scientists have already done since starting with SARS in 2002, the new vaccine would be less. Eventually, like flu shots, vaccines will be available in hospitals and retail pharmacies without a prescription.

Similar to flu shots, some people on the trial experienced mild side effects such as fatigue and headaches. Side effects can be unpleasant, but it shows that vaccination plays a role, strengthens protection against the virus, and prepares for the real thing. When millions of people take shots, even very rare side effects can occur. There is a national infrastructure for monitoring side effects through the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), and hospitals and other providers like us need to report serious incidents.

Our community is distrustful of medical institutions. Sadly, this distrust includes vaccines. The reason behind our skepticism is justified. Past racist and ethically corrupt efforts such as taxiggy studies are unacceptable and unacceptable.

But fears from the past must not prevent us and our loved ones from staying healthy. I consider my work in medicine to be an act of social justice. I am a doctor and a leader in healthcare.
