After nine months of illness, shutdown, and a relentless outbreak of virus, the first round of COVID-19 vaccination in San Francisco on Tuesday provided some relief.
Frontline healthcare professionals at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital received the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine this morning after 2,000 doses arrived at the hospital on Monday.
Mayor London Breed shared a video of vaccinations being given to hospital health care workers on Tuesday morning, saying, “This pandemic is over. As much as possible to keep each other safe until we get there. Let’s do that. “”
Elizabeth Fernandez, senior spokeswoman for UCSF, told SFGATE elsewhere in the city that the hospital would receive the vaccine on Wednesday and begin administration on Thursday.

The surge in COVID-19 in San Francisco remains “disastrous,” Health Secretary Dr. Grant Corfax reported on Monday through a virtual briefing that city health officials saw an average of 200 new cases per day. He also said that the number of beds in the intensive care unit available in the Bay Area dropped from 26 percent to 17 percent during the last week.
“If the hospital census continues to rise at its current rate, San Francisco will run out of intensive care unit beds within the next three to four weeks,” Colfax said.
