China reports 360 cases south of Beijing
Beijing (AP) — More than 380 people tested positive for the COVID-19 epidemic in southern Beijing in Hebei Province, China.
Hebei health officials said 40 new cases were identified on Sunday morning, reaching a total of 223. Another 161 were positive, but no symptoms were seen. China does not include such asymptomatic cases in its official tally.
This outbreak is of particular concern, as Hebei borders the capital. Movement between the two is restricted because Hebei workers must show proof of employment in Beijing before they can enter Beijing.
Almost all incidents have occurred in Shijuazhuang, the state capital, about 260 km (160 miles) southwest of Beijing. A handful were also found in the city of Xingtai, 110 kilometers (68 miles) further south.
Both cities conducted mass trials of millions of residents, stopped public transport and taxis, and restricted residents to their communities and villages for a week.
Last Sunday, the National Health Commission of China reported that 69 new cases were confirmed nationwide the day before. Most of them occurred in Hebei Province. Others include 21 people who recently arrived from abroad.
One new case occurred in Beijing, with 32 cases confirmed in a small outbreak that surfaced about three weeks ago. Almost all incidents occur in the northeastern suburbs of the city.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga defended the measure, emphasizing that the rising curve would flatten in a month. About 4,000 deaths are associated with COVID-19 nationwide. There is growing concern that hospitals will become thinner. Recently, the number of cases in Tokyo has skyrocketed to more than 2,000 per day. Other urban areas are calling on the central government for similar emergency measures.
