A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that a 25% increase in food shortages during a Covid-19 pandemic is associated with disrupted psychological health.
The most extreme form of food insecurity, food shortages, occurs when a family does not have enough food to eat. In a nationally representative sample of 63,674 adults in the United States, blacks and Latin Americans were at more than twice the risk of food shortages as white Americans.
“People in color are disproportionately affected by both food shortages and Covid-19,” said Jason Nagata, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, and lead author of the study.
