According to the analysis, colchicine reduced hospitalization by 25%, ventilator need by 50%, and mortality by 44%.
Dr. Jean-Claude Tardiff, Principal Investigator, hopes that the discovery will reduce hospital congestion and reduce medical costs in his home state of Quebec and elsewhere.
Colchicine is available in drug stores and has been used for hundreds of years in the treatment of diseases such as gout, according to Tardiff. Researchers say the drug can be used very quickly to treat people with COVID-19.
