Nevertheless, additional protection may be needed if there is a risk of serious illness if infected, or if you are expected to stay around another person for an extended period of time, such as on an airplane.
Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease expert at the University of California, San Francisco, said that one option for scenarios that require additional protection is to wear a cloth mask and a regular surgical mask.
Gandhi said a combination of either mask on top could help achieve a similar effect to the N95 mask. She recommended additional protection for people indoors in high-incidence areas. This may reflect the circulation of the more contagious variants.
Another option recommended by Gandhi and colleagues in situations where “maximum” protection is needed is a two-layer cloth mask with a filter material in between.
Gandhi said that a single cloth mask for everyday use is made of a tightly woven material and it is important that there are at least two layers. This creates an “obstacle course” that makes it harder for the particles that carry the virus to break through.
