London’s ultra-Orthodox Jews, one of the world leaders in virus infection

According to a new study, London’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community boasts one of the highest COVID-19 infection rates in the world at 64%. The BBC reported on Wednesday.

This figure is nine times higher than the average UK infection rate of about 7%, and is “one of the highest reported in the world,” the London School of Economics and Tropical Medicine found.

The study used samples from approximately 15,000 members of London’s 23,000 strong Orthodox Jewish community.

According to the BBC, the study took place in December, after which another wave of infection struck the United Kingdom. This means that the current numbers can be even higher.

The reasons behind these extraordinary numbers remain unclear, the researchers pointed out. However, co-author of the study, Dr. Rosalind Ego, said that religious and ethnic minority groups are at increased risk of infection at all stages of the pandemic.

Although the population density and poverty of the capital’s ultra-Orthodox community may explain part of the excessive prevalence, British Jewish men are Christian men, even after adjusting for socio-economic factors. You are twice as likely to die of COVID-19 as you are.
