Hamilton’s COVID-19: new outbreaks, more fatalities, 30 jumps in new cases

Hamilton’s COVID-19 The number of deaths reached 11, the outbreak was declared in hospice, and the number of people infected with the virus in nursing homes surged by 19.

On Thursday, Hamilton Public Health confirmed Wednesday that a 74-year-old man had died in a hospital. He was the fourth person to die of a virus in Hamilton and did not live in a nursing home or nursing home.

Also on Thursday, an outbreak was declared at Emmanuel House Hospice at Stinson St. 90, where four staff members tested positive.

At Cardinal Retirement Residences on Herkimer Street, one of Hamilton’s six on-site outbreaks, the number of confirmed cases has skyrocketed from 26 to 45. One additional staff member became positive, bringing the total number of staff at COVID-19 to 17.

In a new Cardinal case, public health said in an email, “With the expansion of the COVID-19 test at facilities where the outbreak was declared, the number of confirmed positive cases increased.”

Hamilton’s confirmed COVID-19 cases increased by 30 on Thursday, from 301 cases on Wednesday to 301. There are also five “probable” cases, which the person is likely to be ill with, but not confirmed in the test results.

Public health spokesperson Antonella Giancarlo is not allowed new admission and no visitors, except in exceptional circumstances in consultation with public health, due to an outbreak at Emmanuel House.

According to its website, Emmanuel House provides care to people facing life-limiting illnesses. “It’s a beautiful and peaceful environment for palliative care residents and their loved ones.”

Of the six ongoing institutional outbreaks, Cardinal was the only home to have a new case on Thursday. At the Heritage Green Nursing Home in Stony Creek, 11 residents and 3 staff tested positive and 3 died. Similar to Clarion Nursing Home in Stony Creek, one staff member is infected with the Chartwell Deerview Crossing Retirement Residence on Rymal Road West. Two residents tested positive at Kingsberry Retirement Residence on Limeridge Road East.

An outbreak in the health care Hamilton nursing home in St. Joseph is also underway. Three staff gave a positive reaction. The nursery at the Charlton Avenue East hospital takes care of sick premature babies.

Announced on Thursday, Hamilton’s first “drive-through” COVID-19 test center will open on Friday at Dave and Reachch Mountain Arena.

The modern evaluation center allows drivers to drop windows and medical staff in the arena parking area to “swab” without leaving the car.
