A Brazilian viral variant appears in Oregon.No. 1 on the west coast
A Brazilian variant of the coronavirus has emerged in Oregon. This is the first such case known on the West Coast of the United States.
Samples were sent to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at the end of January by healthcare professionals in Douglas County, Oregon. They received the results on Monday night and said they were showing the P.1 variant.
“The P.1 variant … seems to be related to a business trip to and from Brazil outside the United States,” a COVID-19 response team in Douglas County said in a statement Tuesday. “This is the first case of the P.1 variant in Oregon and the first case on the west coast of the United States.”
The variant originally tracked in Brazil appears to be more contagious than the original COVID-19 strain. People who are already infected or who have been vaccinated can get infected.
According to the CDC, 10 other P.1 variants have been reported in the United States, 5 in Florida, 2 in Minnesota, and 1 each in Oklahoma, Alaska, and Maryland.
Health officials in Douglas County, western Oregon, said they were waiting for the results of another sample sent to the CDC for genomic sequence DNA testing of the COVID-19 mutant.
