Adjusted retinal imaging improves resolution by 33%
For their work, the NEI team worked with a group of researchers at Stanford University to fine-tune the adaptive optics retinal imaging system to block some of the extra light that illuminates the eye.
Doing so created a ring of light instead of a disc, Tam and colleagues reported. Then, after using small pinholes to further adjust the light coming back from the eye, the group improved the resolution of traditional retinal images by 33%.
“The rods are so small that imaging can be difficult,” said Dr. Rongwen Lu, a postdoctoral fellow at NEI’s Clinical and Translation Imaging Unit. “By eliminating some of the light in the system, the rod is actually easier to see. Therefore, in this case, the less it is, the more it is.”
