Scientists believe constipation may be an early sign of Parkinson’s disease

Scientists suggest that Lewy bodies kill some of the brain cells that control the healthy functioning of various parts of the body, including the gastrointestinal tract.
Because Lewy bodies are clinically inaccessible and cannot be studied directly in the brain, scientists have had to look for related symptoms such as constipation. Lewy body dementias can be lurking in the brain for years before diagnosis.
The Hebrew University team, led by Professor Joshua Goldberg of the Department of Medicine and Neurobiology, overexpressed a protein called α-synuclein in the brain cells of laboratory mice. Alpha-synuclein controls gastrointestinal motility. It is also the main component of Lewy bodies.
As a result, overexpression of proteins caused mouse brain cells to contract, slowing electrical activity and directly affecting the physiological properties that lead to constipation. Researchers have concluded that this is also likely a process that occurs in humans in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease.
“As far as we know, everyone has a series of causal links between the effects of α-synuclein protein on brain cells and the early symptoms we have long known in advance of the disease. This is the first time I’ve explained it, “says Goldberg.
Research is still a hypothesis for humans, but Goldberg is enthusiastic.
“Think of a patient between the ages of 55 and 60 who is suffering from constipation,” he says. “One day, we may design tests based on the neurological changes we discover to determine if neurological factors that may suggest Parkinson’s disease are working … in the future, various biomarkers.
