More than one-third of recent Philadelphia COVID-19 cases were caused by viral variants, officials say
Philadelphia — Authorities say that a variant of COVID-19 accounts for a significant proportion of recently reported cases in Philadelphia.
So far, the Philadelphia region has seen an increasing proportion of UK, California, and New York variants, officials said. As of Monday, no Brazilian and South African variants have been observed in the region.
Frederick Bushman, Dean of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, said: “We are very worried about what explains this upward tick of the infectious disease we are seeing-how much of it is a new variant.”
Bushman’s Microbiology Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania is one of the few tests for COVID-19 mutants.
Bushman’s team is now aware of a plateau, but points out that the study could be delayed by a few weeks and could surge.
