Guinea detects cases of Ebola and resets counts at the end of the outbreak | Mighty 790KFGO
Dakar (Reuters)-A case of Ebola was diagnosed in Guinea, a health agency spokesman said Friday, resetting the counts that started last week to declare a virus-free country.
The incident was detected on Thursday in the southeastern town of Soulouta, less than 20 km (12 miles) from where the current outbreak began in February. “It’s still unclear if this is a contact case. An investigation is underway,” a spokesman said.
A total of 15 people in West African countries tested positive for Ebola, and 9 died since the outbreak began. It recorded the first resurgence of the virus in Guinea since the most deadly epidemic of the disease, which killed more than 11,000 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone between 2013 and 2016.
The development of Ebola is usually declared 42 days after the second negative test of the blood sample in the last confirmed case.
At the end of February, Guinea launched a vaccination campaign to contain the spread of the virus, which causes severe bleeding and organ failure and spreads through contact with body fluids.
“I’m sad to hear of a case of Ebola reported in Guinea,” said Matshidiso Moeti, head of the World Health Organization’s Africa region, on Twitter.
The WHO said in March that the February resurrection was most likely caused by a latent infection of the population from the last outbreak of Ebola, rather than the virus jumping over the species wall again.
