Arkansas reports 178 new virus cases, expanding prison visits
Little Rock, Arkansas (AP) — Arkansas reported 178 new cases of the coronavirus on Friday as the state prison system extended direct visits to six more facilities.
The Ministry of Health said there are currently a total of 331,882 cases of virus in the state since the pandemic began. The state’s active incidents, which do not include those who died or recovered, increased by 25 to 1,732.
State COVID-19 deaths have been reduced by one after being reclassified as non-virus related, with no additional deaths reported. The total number of deaths from COVID-19 in Arkansas is currently 5,661. State COVID-19 hospitalizations increased from 19 to 160.
The Corrections Bureau has announced that it will extend the modified face-to-face visit program to the McPherson Unit, North Central Unit, Central Arkansas Community Correction Center, East Central Arkansas Community Correction Center, Omega Supervision Sanctions Center, and Southwest Arkansas Community Correction Center.
The agency launched a face-to-face pilot program at four facilities in December. The program only visits pre-approved individuals.
The Ministry of Health also said that an additional dose of about 33,000 coronavirus vaccines was given throughout the state. So far, more than 1.3 million doses have been given out of the 2 million doses assigned to the state.
